News Flash:

Handbag Auction Party, a big thank you to every one who came. We raised £2100!!!

Isolation can keep you in an abusive relationship for a long time.  Not being able to find out what would happen if you left, having no-one to talk to, and lacking any basic infomation, all make life even more difficult.  The internet opens up a whole world of information but maybe you haven't been allowed to use the computer much, or maybe you are afraid to use it in case your partner finds out you were looking for help.  We know the fear that makes you stay trapped.  We hope that we can help you to break that trap and find your own way to freedom.  One of our services is providing internet access to you.  You can come to the Hope Centre in Lichfield and use the internet to find information, to keep in touch with friends and family, or just to chat to our staff or other service users.  If you are a technophobe and scared to touch a computer we will help you to get started and find what you want.  Contact us for details and we can put you in touch with the whole world, safely.

For those who are afraid of computers here's a little poem - it's not true so don't let it put you off.  It really couldn't happen!

THE COMPUTER SWALLOWED GRANDMA
The computer swallowed Grandma
Yes, honestly its true!
She pressed 'control' and 'enter'
And disappeared from view.

It devoured her completely,
The thought just makes me squirm.
She must have caught a virus
Or been eaten by a worm.

I've searched through the recycle bin
And files of every kind;
I've even used the Internet,
But nothing did I find.

In desperation, I asked Jeeves
My searches to refine.
The reply from him was negative,
Not a thing was found 'online'.

So, if inside your 'Inbox',
My Grandma you should see,
Please 'copy', 'scan' and 'paste' her
And send her back to me.

DOMESTIC ABUSE ISN’T JUST VIOLENCE

Many women think that if they aren’t being hit, punched or strangled they are not victims of domestic abuse. This is a myth. There are many ways that people can abuse someone and many of the most damaging do not involve any physical contact. If you are reading our website it may be that you feel that something is wrong in your relationship. If you are concerned then the following questions might help you:

· Does your partner call you names or put you down in front of others?

· Does he isolate you from family and friends?

· Does he withhold money?

· Have there been any sexual assaults?

· Does he make threats towards you?

Emotional abuse is one of the most damaging types of abuse and the effects stay with you for a lot longer than most of the physical scars. There is a joke about a man and his wife who were having some problems and ended up not speaking to each other. The man realised that he needed to be up early the next morning to catch a flight and wanted his wife to wake him. Not wanting to be the first to break the silence he left her a note saying ‘Please wake me at 5am’. He put it where he knew she would find it. He woke up next morning at 9am and was furious that he had missed his flight. He was about to go and find his wife when he saw a note by the side of the bed which said ‘It is 5am – wake up’.

We may smile at the humour, but many women experience the silent treatment in a way that is threatening and very menacing. There may be verbal threats and shouting which make you feel very frightened. You may feel that nothing you do is good enough. These are all legitimate reasons to ring our helpline and talk to someone.

Whatever your reason for feeling that your relationship is in trouble, please call us today and share your worries and concerns. If you were concerned enough to find our website then you may need to be concerned enough to take the next step and talk to someone – anonymously if you wish. We are happy to support you and maybe we can you to find ways of preventing the abuse from escalating. Call us today on our 24 hour helpline – 01543 676800 .

We can provide you with help and support if you are a woman experiencing abuse in the home. Have a look around our website - you will find lots of information, lots of tips for coping and ways of contacting us if you would like further advice.
